NUS Engineering Building Fire


Building in NUS Engineering faculty catched fire today. Around 2.25 pm smoke was first detected on the roof of Block E3A at the Kent Ridge Campus at 2.25pm and people in the building is evacuated. A Chinese male security guard was injured and sent to hospital. NUS said that apart from him, no one else was hurt and the affected building and the surrounding areas are being cordoned off for safety reasons.[1]

Eyewitnesses reported seeing flames leap out of building as bystanders posted pictures to Twitter of smoke rising, visible from several kilometres away. The building houses the Solar Energy Research Institute (SERIS) as well as the Material Science department.[2]

As of known, cause of the fire is unknown. The National University of Singapore (NUS) is Singapore's oldest and largest university in terms of student enrollment and curriculum offered. The university's main campus is located in southwest Singapore at Kent Ridge.

The fire was extinguished at about 7.10pm, according to a statement by SCDF.According to The Straits Times, the fire, which started at 2.15pm, burnt through the block and spread to the rooftop The paper also reported that fire is believed to have started from a research laboratory in Block E3A and spread over the seven-story building.  [3]
